This might be a weird query, but I'm a vegan, and am looking for trainers (sneakers) which don't contain any animal suffering. I gather that a lot of trainers contain either parts that have been tried out with lab rats, or are manufactured from animal stuff. Does anyone know of any trainers which are completely artificial?

Sydney:

Once spring springs, I walk the dogs barefoot each night. I love it.

As to the question: the reason for the separation of toes is so they have independent movement, perhaps not evident until you experience it yourself. Quite different, even from very thin soled moccasins.

But if I have a smooth surface like neighborhood sidewalks, I'm barefoot.

Hi Richard Exciting stuff! I too grew up (country N Mi.) bare foot and have been trying to find shoes that are flexible and thin soles, etc. Its so fun to read someone else has been on a similar quest. These 5 fingered shoes are curious looking. I think I quite like them. I haven't read finished reading all about them on your site yet. My initial question is why do the toes have to be separated? But for now big hugs for you for leading me to these weird-do shoes. Syd

"How did you manage to make them pose together?"

Took sufficient shots until one looked like they're the angels they're not, rather than the brats they are.

I got my Vibram Five Fingers about two weeks ago. I like them! I had previously thought about getting those Nike shoes (can't remember the name) a few years back, but never did. The Five Fingers are great - like little gloves for your feet. Sprinting seems much more natural, and overall, just feels more "right" to be barefoot when working out, walking, etc. I've never taken to tennis shoes -- mostly preferring sandals (notably, not flip flops).

Will look forward to hearing about your experience with the VFF.
