Kyle:

I suspect it would be accounted for by the difference between acute, random/intermittent exposure to cold and chronic, steady state exposure. Take a look at surfers. The ocean is pretty cold, even down in SoCal, and they're very lean. Speaking of which, check this out:

http://www.surfwisefilm.com/

As far as experimentation goes, I don't know that I'm interested beyond what I've experienced so far, and I really don't have grand designs on it. I've been using the cold plunge as a pleasurable experience after a workout for a while. It immediately restores energy so you don't have to spend two hours cooling down.

Some people really like it, such as I, and some don't. During the winter months I usually can only comfortably take 30-60 seconds.

What about the theory that the cold will induce the body to keep a thermally protective layer of fat, a la the eskimos? Is that just an old wives tale, or is there anything to it? I wonder if the apparently aberrant hunger you experienced is part of that? Or perhaps some kind of metabolic "store up for winter" kind of reaction?

Anyway, based on nothing more than my gut, something doesn't strike me as right about the cold/fat-burning connection you think you're seeing here. But that's what experimenting is for, it'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Is there a way you could make it more of a controlled experiment?

At the very least, it sounds like it will build character ;-). I sure as hell wouldn't want to be doing that.
