What defense has the average person? It's hand in hand. Doc prescribes, and patients see it on TEEVEE!!!
Makes them feel special, important, and cared for, I suppose.

it is hard (read: near impossible) to escape the thought that it all about $$$, and not about health at all.
- MDs follow the guidelines because that avoids lawsuits
- Guidelines follow the drugs, because that research (and related info) gets published, and pushed and pushed and pushed….
- Research follows the drug opportunities, because those get funded….
— and the people keep consuming this miserable soup a.k.a. "Our Health Care System."
Why do you think we're in this state of affairs (I'm in England, but I can't imagine, under the NHS, that we're faring any better on this)? Is it because we trust Doctors for our nutritional advice? But then, most nutritionists will push the same rubbish too…
I mean, I'm a big believer in the free markets, that the best solution will win out (or people will suffer under the bad one, ignorant of the alternative – as we see now), yet that's not what we see here.
Now, America's healthcare system, whilst still probably the freest, is still far from free. Huge regulatory bodies, Medicare and Medicaid (which are both about pushing drugs, because the Government can easily buy those up in large quantities); not to mention all the research coming out of Institutes and Universities, funded by the Government, which pushes the old party line about diet.
My money is that it has something to do with this massive government interference, but I'd like to know what you think.
