I'm an inconsistent Journey fan, never resolute. Sometimes they strike me as far too pop (Steve Perry), and other times I can really get into appreciating them. I suppose that's why they've definitely stood the test of time: they appeal to a number of genres.
But, definitely, I prefer the early stuff and in particular, when Gregg Rolie was still on board (he left shortly after this, I believe).
Steve Perry indisputably has a wonderfully pure voice; I just think it's more pop than rock. But it's also a power voice and I do tend to like bands where vocals isn't just an afterthought but an integral instrument. Think: Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, David Lee Roth, Ann Wilson, Geddy Lee...
And, so, here we go. Be sure to crank it and get into Gregg Rolie's harp mastery at around 2:00 and later, 3:30. enjoy.
Crank it.

No doubt that was their best line up. They were all such great musicians but when Rolie split he took the balls (pardon my french) with him.
