They're often unnesessary...the words, that is.

My friend Art recently redid his whole blog and here's the photo on the entry page for the private portion. He's 71 years of age in this photo.

In case you don't know, once I got started in May 2007, I didn't really start until I found Art. I thank my lucky stars for that commenter, Vendo, who clued me in. Otherwise, I've no idea where I'd be.

Thank you, Sir; Mr. Art De Vany.

    Art’s the man!

But I hope he’s doing those leg extensions for some magazine rather than an example of a real workout.

    Leg extensions are as un-evolutionary / un-paleo / un-primal / dis-functional as exercises come!!!!

I did lots of leg extensions when I began, but gradually backed off them and most other isolation exercises.

But I like leg extensions cause they’re fun. I’ll do them maybe once every couple of months and always as the very last exercise, when I’m already spent. Coupla reasons come to mind:

      - They are for me the only exercise where I can get an excruciating “burn” and still drive forward.

      - It serves as a sort of place holder for my progress, to see how effective have been the squants, jumps, lunges, & leg presses.

Also, I don’t think this out to be any sort of religion. For regular folks out there, I’d rather see them doing brief intense isolation than nothing at all.

Holy mole – the man looks as though he’s in his early 50’s! I’m not even 32 yet – but if he walked by me on the street I’d turn my head to take another look and he’s 40 years my senior! Well played, that man! I can only hope to look as good as him (female equivalent of course!) when I’m 50, yet alone 70!

I reckon a man of your good sense would have ‘discovered’ the principals of evolutionary fitness on your own – as many others have done. Marks go to Art for putting you on a speed course though!

Not knowing a whole lot about him (yet), he looks like the perfect example of “living well”, as opposed to focusing on “living longer”. That is to say, I’d rather live a shorter life in my own personal peak health, than a longer, extended, slow failing death!

      Arlo:

Interesting you should say that, because that’s exactly what he emphasized in the LV conference I attended (where he made the DVD he sells). Yep, live fine until you fall off a cliff, so to speak.

I found “Free the Animal” through Art De Vany. I linked to De Vany from an economics site, perhaps through “Library of Economics and Liberty,” or Patri Friedman’s site… I don’t remember. But I do remember thinking that I hit the mother lode when I clicked on FTA. Paleo diet, evo-fitness, libertarians, and some interest in prog rock… what else could I ask for in finding like minded folks.

    • Tin Tin

Agree. I too foudn FTA via Art’s website. FTA is the mother lode. It’s got a good well rounded perspective on the paleo lifestyle – plenty of info on how to eat and exercise and just enough info on why. I haven’t been to Art’s site in a while but in the past I’ve found Art can carry on a bit with often unnecessary academic ‘posturing’ but Richard just gets to the fucking point. Mark’s daily apple is good too but lacks the personality and humour of FTA.

I went through Art’s site one deep reading day and enjoyed it very much. The link that you recommended in your response to Vendo is a dead link, where was it going?

  • Art

Very kind of Richard to put this post up. He may be my best student.

Leg extensions are not a particularly good exercise—they burn the patella—but, they are a good shaping move. I do them only to hit that part of the vastus above the knee for looks and for tennis.
