I haven’t really done many success stories lately. I guess, because they’re obviously all over the place in terms of Paleo/Primal, now, and so why bother?
That changed with an outtatheblue email from Kit Perkins, real man. I never had taken serious account of the ‘hearts & mind” part, which is how I attempt to distinguish myself.
It boggles my mind to think I once gave any fucks about “news”, politics, or had even the slightest positive feelings about government. Not to mention feminism et al.
I can’t thank everyone involved in this enough – my life has changed immeasurably for the better. It astounds me that I now view my stumbling upon “paleo” as mostly transformative BEYOND six-pack abs.
Revelation. I felt silly for not thinking of this angle explicitly, before. Anyone can go to any number of places and get whatever BroScience or similar they want, or any collection of health and fitness tips in any domain. This is the only place on the Internet where you also get a pretty interesting take on socio-political dynamics with 20 years of experience arguing with the very best, up to and including Nobel prize winners and their progeny. USENET was an amazing place, back in the day. I never watched TEEVEE.
…Soon as I published Kit, emails begin ringing in. Some just missives but some, true Body and Mind success stories and now, that’s the only thing I’ll publish from here out. If I’ve changed your mind about diet and it helped you and got results AND, I’ve also changed your MIND in terms of what you wring hands over, regurgitate, etc., I am the place to publish your story, so bring it on Email me. Pics are great, but it’s not necessary. Plus, the change of mind is equally important and unless you have before & after MRIs while watching FNC, CNN and MSNBC, the only thing you can do is write out how and why you have changed the way you think.
So, here’s Timothy.
You may vaguely remember me, I am that guy whom you inspired to start deadlifting in your Leangains articles of 2011, who was really happy to finally pull 300 in 2012.
Sending you this update so you will know how much you continue to help me, and to encourage you, in all your magnanimity, to pity and forgive the trolls. It is only from ignorance and against their wills that they offend.
Earlier this year I read all about your milk diet, and that inspired me to hit the bottle too, but for weight gain, not fat loss. The primal GOMAD: raw Jersey daily plus eggs and whatever else I could get down, which wasn’t much towards the end. Fattened me right up like a hog, never been fatter since before paleo. In the end though, I did gain significant strength and achieved a new record for leanness. Even better, it was an easy diet and the results feel perfectly sustainable.
Then I attended a powerlifting meet for the first time, and despite falling well short of gym records, managed a reasonable total for a novice (365kg at 75kg weight class) including three white lights on my 365lb deadlift opener. (385 and 405 would’ve followed, you see, but [excuses etc.])
Thank you Richard. My most sincere respect and good wishes. Remain ever insouciant.
I sure do remember Timothy. He first emailed me and told me that my video of doing deadlifts for 3 or 4 reps of 305 pounds at 49 years old for the first time ASTOUNDED him. He thought it superhuman, but I’ll bet that was simple ignorance and you can never predict what cures ignorance. Now, he pulls #375 for reps and he never in his wildest dreams even imagined it before. That’s a mind change, and I’m guessing he doesn’t mind my obscure anarchism, either. Maybe he likes it.
You want to see something veritably hilarious? Check out all the comments from coke guzzling fatboy gamers living in mom’s basement. Read it and weep, then laugh, because the flip side is that in spite of all the Paleo books and cookbooks preaching to the the choir ad infinitum, there’s actually real man work to do.
Nobody has anything fresh and new to offer, but me, and it’s not for sale because I would never buy your mind. Even for a penny. It’s yours, inviolably, a complete mess to anyone else. In other words, any individual mind is unique in that it ‘aint worth a penny to anyone else, but invaluable to you.
You insist on your own mind. So why not have it all? Instead, so many subjugate it EXTERNALLY to the thoughts, diktats, admonitions of others in political power, social power (like those in walkie-talkie comms with Jesus), peer group norms, general social norms, and even entertainment power (what would Brad Pitt think/do). You have all of your mind already. It’s only worth a shit to you, nobody else wants it.
You have to use it. And plus: everyone else wants theirs as well.
Timothy lays out his whole plan of bulking and cutting here. Do check it out. It includes both diet and exercise (Leangains style).
I don’t think he ever paid a penny, or hired anyone. His short list of where he got all this from:
- Marksdailyapple.com (taught me nutrition)
- Freetheanimal.com (taught me how to be a man)
- Leangains.com (taught me strength and diet theory)
- Startingstrength.com (taught me strength practice)
- Rippedbody.co.jp (taught me diet practice)
- Fitocracy.com (JUST GO THERE!)
- Proteinfactory.com (best proteins in the universe)
More to follow in days to come.
