Yoko Isomoto, Woman’s World Hang Gliding Champion
Yoko Isomoto of Japan won it, there in the carnage of alps flying in Annecy, France. Haven’t seen shit like that in nearly 20 years of being around this stuff. Numerous serious injuries, and 9 reserve-chute deployments in 10 days (all survived, but deployments are very rare events—vast majority never do it in a lifetime……...

I really can’t get enough of the video. Kevin Richardson is he; he walks among and lion-hugs lions in the wild, as well as spotted hyenas that are seemingly as lovable as domestic dogs…and incidentally…HOUSE CAT INDIFFERENTs: watch your evolutionary great great great great grandparents demonstrate cat-to-human affection, you comfortable, moody, lazy, and nearly worthless high-maintenance……...

This is pretty damn beautiful, not to mention astounding. Got a minute and 23 seconds to spare? Glassoff from mike bilyk on Vimeo. Andy Jackson Airpark is near and dear to this heart, being the second high altitude flight I did after my basic training back in around ’97. Parents-in-law lived in Moreno Valley and……...

Great flying day yesterday. Overcast and hence, light—perfect conditions for buzzing launch a bit. Very smooth. This was a fun video to toss together this morning, from 4 different cameras. There’s a bit during the drive up to launch from the iPhone, then the launch from my dad’s video camera, the landing from my video……...

Headed up to the rim around 5pm, intending for a 6:30ish launch in the glass off (smooth rising air everywhere). Lo & behold, there sits Dave with his tandem wing, whom I’d not seen in a few years. That’s one cool thing about hang gliding: you’ll randomly run into people on mountain tops you haven’t……...

I half heartedly considered putting up something on the blog last night. Went nowhere. Beatrice took me out for sushi instead. I had just put version 2.0 of the book to bed—off to the editor—and we’ll see what comes of it. I ended up working far more on V2 than V1. It’s done for me,……...

[Regular blogging will resume. Note at the bottom of the post.] Mimi, with her own blog, sporting a cute profile pic of herself, rings in; comment on my last macho hang gliding post, complete with Led Zep “Whole Lotta Love” music and women (that’s plural) “you need me.” Umm…that hang-gliding is so badass. I’d love……...

I’m back. Well, yes, back at home and, and, for the first time in a month, not for a 2-3 day stopover…not until the next gig. No deal until The21Convention. That should be fun and I’ve been preparing. How? By getting my 20 sumthin’ on. Why? How would you get ready to talk to a……...
Read MoreI think I’ll go Independently Fly a Hang Glider
Yesterday (7/4) was so amusing. I can, and did, think of many who were and are Dependent — forcibly so — while being either innocent or heroic. But I’ll save it for later. Right now, I’m going hang gliding. I’ve been away for the better part of all of June. The latest part being a……...

Hi folks. Sorry for the lack of posts but that will rectify soon enough. In fact, I’m anxious to get back to it in earnest. I’ve been out of town about 20 days out of the last month, mostly doing vacationing sorts of things. There was the week of MovNat, three days home, Italy for……...

At least a couple of more posts today, but I just had to toss this one up, discovered in my morning rounds reading my friend Davis Straub's daily Oz Report. For better than ten years Davis has had the fortune to travel the world flying in hang-glider competitions and reporting on them. He's tireless, and a really great guy I've had the opportunity to meet in person a couple of times. This 3-minute video is a recent competition in the flatlands near Forbes, Australia. Ultralight tugs tow up the hang glider pilots who then race cross country, typically for 80-100 miles, depending upon where the goal is declared. I'm getting back to the weight and strength ratios I was at when I first began this great sport. Flying for a few days last August was far less exhausting than it had been over the last five years, causing me to fly less and less. So, it just may be that I'll be doing this more and more in years to come. It is great compound exercise for the upper body. A hang glider is maneuvered by weight shift, i.e., you have to deflect you body's entire weight, suspended from a...

Someone just turned me on to the Vils Brothers out of Rio. The Brazilians are nuts about HG. I always love being around them. At any rate, check out this one minute collection of bits. Don't miss the 1-second shot of a gaggle of dozens of hang gliders sharing the same thermal. I've been in those. So long as everyone's turning the same direction (as dictated by our own safety procedures), it's not as wild as it looks.
