The Story. What’s Up

Nope. Not dead. Gonna happen some day. Not yet.
My 88-year-old dad finally called me a week or so ago to check up on me. Do you get the humor in that? The 88-year-old dad calls his 65-year-old son to check up.
So, here’s the story: I gradually got bored out of my skull with everything scrolling across my social media feeds. I don’t even know how to put it without sounding like a total downer, but I just had this growing sense that I flat-out didn’t care. About anything. Hell, I barely cared about my own damn well-being, because it felt like I was stuck in a world that meant jack shit to me. Zero. Nada. I didn’t give a rip about anyone or anything.
I’d scroll past the feeds on Facebook and X—formerly Twitter, if we’re being precise—and it was all the same echo chamber crap. The same people parroting the same tired lines, over and over. Boring as watching paint dry, and awful in that soul-sucking way. Can you wrap your head around that? I mean, years ago, I was chatting with this sharp guy I knew, and I admitted I didn’t care. He shot back, “Well, it’s hard not to care,” and damn if I didn’t agree. So, I’ve always made an effort to give a damn about the world and all its mess. But fast-forward to now…
It’s been a year into the Trump administration—yeah, that whole saga—and I’ve generally thought what he’s done, along with his cabinet picks, has been pretty solid. Not perfect, but effective. Meanwhile, I see folks on the left straight-up denying reality, like it’s some alternate universe. Then there are the conservatives on the right, for whom nothing is ever good enough—everything’s a disaster, no matter what. And don’t get me started on the conspiracy nuts. Sure, a bunch of old theories have panned out as true (hello, government cover-ups), but now? Everything’s a fresh conspiracy plot. They gobble it up like candy, spinning endless yarns that go on and on and on. It’s exhausting.
I don’t fucking care anymore. That’s where I’m at. That’s why you haven’t heard from me—I’m just not into this bullshit.
Rather than drone on, I’ve made a little action video. By action, I mean getting off my ass and doing something more than hanging out in my Pattaya hi-rise condo binging Netflix and sipping whiskey. I loaded my cool retro motorcycle onto my diesel pickup and drove 500 miles over 12 hours to relocate it to way NE Thailand in anticipation of full relocation in about 6 weeks.
I’m slightly inebriated and am sporting a potbelly. Feel free to chide. As you see in the video, I will have tons to occupy my time once up here permanently. Plus lots of outside grilling of meat and fish. Less whiskey.
So, that gives an idea of what’s next in terms of radical change. What does it portend for blogging and video production? We’ll see, but I suspect it will be more and better, only under the theme of action and building something. Something better to do than sitting around jaw-flapping about what people think about a bunch of shit they can do nothing about.

Welp, that’s why they call it brain rot, Richard. I think most of us eventually come to that conclusion, at least those who are paying attention. Life was a lot happier back when we didn’t “know” so much….
I’ve been poking around a little, looking to see where you were ….and I came to the erroneous conclusion that you were moving, like you had mentioned doing. (You’re gonna miss that view of the bay, but ya can’t have everything. I had to give up the mountains and my precious year-round hummingbirds to get back where I belong, in Texas. Worth every “sacrifice.” Anyway, I see I was wrong and your move is ahead, still. Looking forward to hearing how all that goes.
Looks peaceful!
I’m feeling kinda dead & tired myself. I think if Harris had won I’d be freaking out about civilization burning, but instead I don’t have anything to kick me in the ass.
I think the most fun I’ve had in recent years has been when I took COVID off to go bumming around the Western US, skipping to a new town each month. I’ve got a lease, now, and it feels like a leash. I think I’d be happier with an open road and throwing out my routine each month.
Richard, glad you’re ok and that you’re moving. I thought that maybe you had lost interest in all the endless drama that goes round and round. That’s a pretty good characterization of the main characters especially the right for whom nothing is ever good enough. Exactly, Same in Europe/UK or they cannot agree to compromise and work together, so they get nowhere. Anyway enough of that. Good luck with the move and let us know how you get on.
I agree. There’s a lot of people on X and Facebook spouting off about things that they know nothing about.
Ah contentment….the ultimate inside job
