Pork & Fruit: Good Together

For some reason, pork is simply one of those meats that, to me, seems — even intuitively — to go well with…well, just about any fruit I can think of.

I’ve done carnitas with persimmons and I’ve done them with apples.

Last night I was wondering what to cook and noticed I had a 1 lb package of Trader Joe’s carnitas in the fridge. Then I looked on the counter. There was a basket of oranges Beatrice had picked up a few days back (and which I hardly ever eat), and now, a basket of cherries she had picked up just that afternoon. And that was it; I was off and running. Here’s what became of it in 10 minutes flat. Click on the image for the hi-res version.

I grabbed one orange and a handful of cherries. While I peeled the orange & pitted the cherries, I got my broiler fired up and a good tablespoon of butter going in a sauce pan. Then, half the orange and half the cherries went onto the cookie sheet with the pork, under the broiler set on low.

In the meantime I sauteed the other half of the fruit in the butter and after only a couple of minutes mashed it all up and then ran it through a wire mesh to get rid of the fiber.

Too delicious. I’m gonna have to do it again with the other package of carnitas I have.

Sounds amazing, I’ve got to try this. I just used an orange in my sauteed-vegetable-feta-pan and that came out quite nicely. But your sauce…sounds tasty.

I’m a long time reader, but this is my first time commenting (love the blog). I just placed an order with Slanker’s Grass Fed Meats, and included some of their grass fed pork. They “wild raise” their hogs with no supplemental feed except alfalfa during the holding period before slaughter. I have not tried it yet, but I thought others might be interested in knowing about this option for another grass fed meat.

That looks fantastic. My favourite combination with meat is blueberries and red wine with a dollop of butter. mmm Yum.

That looks so delicious. I love fruit with meat as well. And, now that more and more fruit is in season in Michigan, I am simply consuming more of it.

My sister does a great roast pork with peaches. They go soft and warm, and compliment the pork beautifully.

Those TJ carnitas are great with a bit of grilled pineapple. I’m currently limiting my fruit, especially those with higher sugar content, and can’t wait to re-introduce. Add some lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro, lime, and avocado for a perfect Mexican meal without the tortillas or rice. Just a bit of grilled pineapple goes a long way in that combo. Love your food porn ;)~
