Guys: How to Get Swole in a Day
2 Ways:
1) Fuckahard Deadlifts. Close to 1.5 times body weight and above, sky limit, but 1.5 will probably do. For reps, because injuries fuck you. Go for 4-6 reps, two times.
2) Or, drink a half to a whole gallon of whole milk. No pussy powders. Just go with the baby thing.
Try both. Tell me how it goes.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT AND HOW IT WORKS
Free The Animal is an eclectic writing project about everything since November 2003. 23 years, 5,500 posts, 5 million words.
It's a paid membership blog. Most posts are free and public, but only paid members can comment. What determines whether it's free or paid is when I publish. Monday through Friday, free and public. Saturday and Sunday, for paid members. That's it. Membership info here.
Already tried it. Works fucking well. Kefir and yogurt instead of milk though. Organic.
You won’t get injured on those DLs if you set properly, don’t jerk the bar off the ground, and keep your chest up — you’ll just drop it if it’s too much. Every guy who calls himself “in shape” should be able to DL 1.5 bodyweight x 4 x 2, if not more. In fact, I probably will do just that (actually, probably more) tomorrow. Beats drinking milk.
“Beats drinking milk”
I’m guessing that’s from ignorance.
I do both.
I can do 1.5 body weight deadlift. Bit of a stall recently as I have a niggling back problem.
giving the milk a miss – messes with my eczema and thyroid :)
I’m nearing 2x body weight on my DL for 5 reps, 4 sets. It feels good. And I look good, though I have to have my shirts and trousers tailored so they fit well.
Found a raw milk diary fairly close to me. Tasty milk and the price is reasonable ($7 / gal). I just don’t drink it fast enough. I’m going to try freezing it in half gallon containers so I don’t waste it.
finally up to 2.25 x bodyweight, 5 reps to failure. Works like a charm. Throw in some chin ups with a 45 lb plate attached to your waist. Bro totally, bro!
Can’t do milk, but whole local grass fed yogurt works for me. Numbers keep going up-up-up so I’m doing something right!
I do 2.2x BW for 5 reps. I then do 5 chin ups with 80lbs added to a belt. I look skinnier than most people at the gym. (5’10”, 162 lbs, 365 lb deadlifts for reps followed by chins 5×80, 8×55, 10×30). Oh well, haha.
That’s great all of you (Julianne, Preston, Danny, John…anyone else near 1.5 or better).
Because of my cervical disc herniation injury and that I’ll be 53 in a few months, I’ve decided to hold at ~1.5 for a good while, which is 275-285 depending, typically 2-3 sets of 5-6 reps. I did a foray to 325 a couple of months back (x4 reps) and had no trouble, but I just want to play it safe.
I believe that one can do 1.5 BW DLs for life and maintain excellent conditioning and strength. I may kick it up a notch or two in time, but I’m in no rush and when I do it I want to do it because 285 x 6 x 3 is just boring and easy.
The myth of the perfect rep is just that, a myth.
I’ll stick to the super slow machine based workout from Body By Science and let the bros brag about their DL numbers.
Did someone take a shit on this blog or something? Where is everybody?
More rulz
Traffic is same, if not higher. I don’t reply to many comments anymore, and when I don’t, they don’t comment as much. People can’t seem to grasp the fact that I don’t give a fuck. 80% of traffic comes from Google natural search, and has for a very long time. My archives are deep, back to 2003.
In other words, fuck everyone, I don’t care.
MAS: I’m not going to criticize machines. I used to do squats but whereas I have a body comp well suited to DLs, not so much for squats and I hate them. So I do reps at 4-500 on the leg press machine. But I fucking love DLs.
I do big six. That’s big 5 plus my DLs.
Sounds reasonable. That’s pretty much how I run my life. Works well for me.
I should feel so lucky to have this precise circumstance thrust upon me lately; we weaned our goat kids and now the two momma goats yield about a gallon of fresh, raw milk off good pasture daily. It’s fantastically sweet and creamy, and with a gallon coming in each day SOMEONE has to make sure there’s room in the fridge. Haven’t gotten the kefir grains out of the freezer yet but at least half a gallon daily fresh for me has been a lot of fun.
I’d get a bar and lift except that carrying 10-gallon waterers over hill and dale for the chickens multiple times a day probably provides something similar.
“Swole,” though? Dunno about that. I’ve gained a good 4 or 5 pounds in the last couple weeks, so that’s encouraging at least since I normally have to monitor to make sure I’m not losing any weight. We’ll see where things go. Kefiring some of it may make a difference.
